[Review] Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Just finished this anime, I should also write a review about Spice and Wolf, but I think that requires more constructive work.. Nevertheless I should be doing my assignments =________=

Anyway, I’ll just throw some thoughts down for this lovely anime.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

From MAL

First note this:

The premise of the project is the 70% possibility that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake will occur in Tokyo in the next 30 years. The anime depicts what would happen if an 8.0 earthquake took place.

This was the only thing that was required for me to watch this anime – it just sounded interesting; a project.

This anime, unlike most animes out there, is not based off any manga, light novel etc.. but rather, raw research.

So a bit more backgrounding:

The story centers on Mirai, a middle school freshman girl who goes to Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba Island for a robot exhibition with her brother Yuuki at the start of summer vacation. A powerful tremor emanates from an ocean trench, the famed Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge crumble and fall, and the landscape of Tokyo changes in an instant. With the help of a motorcycle delivery woman named Mari who they meet on Odaiba, Mirai and Yuuki strive to head back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo.

Alright, so from that you can pretty much tell that the story is pretty typical of a disaster plot. You focus on a few main characters which have one goal. In this case it’s to return home, and survive from this disaster.

Story – Like I said, your typical story, which you’d expect from a disaster plot, but I think it was done very nicely. There are only 11 episodes, nice and short. But the creators kept it sensible, 11 episodes means no time for major character development, and they didn’t. They focused it well. Um.. without having to give away too much, the story was well executed, it felt like the modern day version of Grave of the Fireflies which made a lot of people bawl like a baby.

Animation – Well done, given the nature of the plot, it had to be well done, with all the chaos and disaster. Supposedly some episodes lost quality in animation.. but I couldn’t really tell?

Sound – Not much to say here.. well music was alright, nothing special, nothing I can remember from it (even though I just finished it). Voice acting was done very nicely; must’ve been hard roles to play. It’s probably not easy to get in character like like.

Last Words – Well, I’ve put this anime off for awhile, finishing off other animes (see old reviews). But when I finally got around to this, I really enjoyed it. It’s different, fresh (to an extent) and definitely something a lot of us can relate to. Family, friends, values, hardships, ups and downs..  It’s also somewhat realistic. But doesn’t it sound unique? Given that it’s a project where actual research was conducted.

I wonder.. will Tokyo really have an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 in the next 30 years?
